Book description:

This book is 160 pages packed with information. There is a detailed table of contents that runs to seven pages, but no index.

The book starts out with a history of craps, and an explanation of craps as it is played in casinos. It explains some obsolete controlled shots, and discusses cheating at craps, but of course does not recommend cheating.

The meat of the book is on controlling the dice: grips, picking up the dice, throwing the dice, body stance, shoulder and elbow movements, mental state and concentration, training and exercises, troubleshooting your throws, and disguising your skill.

One nice feature of the book is the multitude of pictures. You not only have words explaining a point, you have a picture you can study.

On page 129 Yuri says: “Instead of performing thousands of throws by yourself, you can use the results of my trials ...” That of course is nonsense. If you want to learn to control the dice the way Yuri recommends, you ought to take a sample of your own throws to be sure you really have control before risking money on your own throws in a casino. Just because somebody else can control the dice does not mean you can do it.

Yuri’s method is to control the dice by spinning them to keep them on axis. On page 95 he says “The purpose of the flick of the wrist is to impart the dice a fast rotation around its side axle.” Be aware that this is not the only way to attempt to control the dice. Not everyone can achieve repeatable identical wrist flicks; some of us are better off with big-muscle movements and minimal reliance on the small muscles in our wrists and fingers. A fast rotation may be good for keeping dice on axis, but all that rotational energy must be dissipated somehow before the dice come to rest, which might mean random bouncing; you might achieve more control by imparting less energy to the dice. So try Yuri’s method, but test yourself to be sure you really have control over the dice before risking money on your throws.
